Powerhouse!

Have you ever thought about generating your own electricity to power your home?  I know, it sounds hard.  In reality, however, you can get at least some of your electricity off the grid more easily and conveniently than you might have thought.  Well, you don’t really generate the power, the sun or the wind does that, but you harness and use the power.  Here’s a way to learn about a system to use solar panels and wind turbines to green your home.

Extra Baggage?

Do you want to be green consumer by consuming less?  Reusable bags are a great, sustainable way to carry groceries or other items you purchase at stores.  They are available at many supermarkets or via the Internet from various websites.  But what if you don’t feel like spending the money to buy reusable bags?  What if you’re not sure they are made from environmentally friendly materials?  What if the effort and expense of yet another new purchase is inconvenient?

No problem.  Simply reuse the free bags you get when you check out.  I don’t know about you, but I have dozens of bags saved from past trips to the grocery store and it’s easy to use these for future trips.  They didn’t cost me any money, they are strong and I won’t let them go to waste.

Next time you go to the grocery store, ask for paper bags when you check out.  I do a lot of shopping at Trader Joe’s, and their paper bags are great because they have strong handles that rarely break, unless way overloaded.  After you unpack your groceries at home, simply fold and save the paper bags for your next trip to the store.  Next time you go out to your car, take your bags and put them in the trunk or under the seat for your next trip to the grocery store, or any store you visit to shop.

It’s no big deal at all to carry a few of your old bags into the grocery store on your next visit.  Just put them in your shopping cart and go about your business.  Give them to the check out teller before you pay so that you don’t need to give you any new bags.  If you feel weird carrying grocery bags into the store, just remember that you’ll be recognized as a greenvenient hero for your eco-friendly ways.  Note, brown paper bags are recyclable and those provided by Trader Joe’s contain at least 40% post consumer recycled content (according to the bottom of a bag).

You can also use the same method by collecting the heavy bags that department stores provide.  It’s best never use these wasteful bags in the first place, but for convenience sake, you’ll probably accumulate a few over time.  If you can simply remember to take them back to the mall or shopping center next time, you’ll do the earth a favor.  Saving and reusing bags is a convenient way to green your life!
